Dr. Christopher K.L. Shun, 40 graduated from Boston University, U.S.A with a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration, Summa Cum Laude and a Bachelor of Arts in Economics, Magna Cum Laude in May 1987. He pursued a Merchant Banking career with Hill Samuel Bank, London from June 1987 to August 1989. Recruited as a Corporate Finance Executive, his responsibilities included designing valuation models for US Fortune 500 companies, property development consulting for the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) and conducting market entry studies for Australian property PLC's into the United Kingdom. In June 1988, he was sponsored to undertake the one-year Corporate Finance Executive (CFE) programme at the London Business School, U.K. In September 1989, he returned to the US to pursue the Master of Science in Management from the MIT SLOAN School of Management, U.S.A. Upon accelerated graduation within 1.3 years (normally 2 years) in February 1991, he joined Bankers Trust International Limited, London as a Merger and Acquisition Associate wherein he authored an internal cross border Europe-Asian Economic Survey for Bankers Trust International Ltd. He was part of the transaction team involved in the BASF (US) US $250 m divestiture and was responsible for the handling of the entire Property portfolio of the late Robert Maxwell of the Mirror Group PLC. His work required extensive travel to the US and Continental Europe particularly Germany, where he acquired proficiency in both spoken and written German.
In January 1992, Dr. Shun returned to Malaysia where he was appointed Group Executive Director of Menang Corporation (M) Berhad (MCB), a public listed company listed on the Main Board (Property) of the Kuala Lumpur Stock Exchange. He supervises the total operations and personnel policies of the Group, reporting directly to the Board of Directors. His responsibilities also include organising external and internal financing for the Group. He sits on the Audit Committee representing Management to the Independent Non-Executive Directors with respect to Corporate Governance and Policy matters. He is also a member of the Remuneration Committee to ensure attractive and competitive remuneration policies are adopted to retain and attract management calibre for the Menang Group. He is also the Finance and Administration Director of Maymerge (M) Sdn. Bhd., the ultimate holding company of the Menang Group. He was responsible for the implementation of the Group's regional diversification into Australia wherein he established a wholly owned subsidiary in Perth, Western Australia since June 1997. He is to be promoted to Group Deputy Managing Director of Menang Corporation (M) Berhad (MCB) effective 1st July 2005.
He has participated in the Senior Management Development Programme (SMDP) conducted by the Harvard Business School in 1994. He was awarded the Advanced Postgraduate Diploma in Management Consultancy (Adv. Dip. C) from Henley Business School, U.K. in April 2000. He qualified in February 2003 as a Certified Financial Planner (CFP ®), a US Financial Planning certification, and currently heads the Financial Planning and Services group within the Menang Group of companies. He completed the Doctor of Business Administration (D.B.A) at Henley Business School, which is awarded by Brunel University, U.K. in October 2004. He won a competitive scholarship for a 3 week Advanced Management Programme at Henley Business School in October 2004.
He has published two Henley Business School academic papers entitled "Risk Management for Property Development" @ July 2000, ISBN No: 1861811651 and the "Risk Factors for Asian Property Investments: A Case for the Malaysian Property Trust" @ July 2002, ISBN No: 186181139X. His two papers are listed in Amazon.Co.UK for purchase. His area of research is in Property Risk Management, Portfolio Management and Property Finance. He has published five articles in the EDGE WEEKLY, a regional Malaysian and Singaporean financial weekly, with respect to Property Risk Management and Asian Property Trusts and he also regularly writes for the Journal of Malaysian Financial Planning. He is in the process of publishing his Doctoral thesis entitled "An Empirical Investigation of the Role of Legal Origin on the Performance of Property Stocks within the Context of a Tactical Asset Allocation Strategy" as a research monograph with Blackwell's Publishers, U.K.
He has been a presenter for the Chartered Institute of Management Accountants (CIMA), Construction Industry Development Board of Malaysia (CIDB), Malaysian Institute for Corporate Governance (MICG), National Property Development Conference (NPDC 2002) and the Financial Planning Association of Malaysia (FPAM 2002) concerning Property Risk Management and Property Trust Management. His Risk Management paper and methodology has been used by the Euromoney Training UK (a division of Euromoney Institutional Investor PLC), United Kingdom for a 3-day seminar entitled "Modelling Techniques for Structuring Real Estate Finance" on 10th - 12th February 2003 at Regency Hotel, London. He is regularly featured in Bloomberg TV on such matters as Property Trusts, Property Risk and Property Finance. He presented a paper entitled "Lifestyle Implications for the 21st Century" at the Multimedia University, Malaysia in December 2004 as a blueprint for responsible and sustainable development in Emerging nations.
Since 1998, Dr. Shun has been involved on a voluntary basis with the Foundation for Community Studies and Development (FOCUSED), a Non-Governmental Organisation, as the Honorary Finance Director. FOCUSED was established in 1993 and received its esteemed designation of "Foundation" in 1998 as recognition by the Malaysian Government for its invaluable support and expertise in improving the standard of living and poverty alleviation amongst the aboriginal indigenous peoples in Malaysia known as the "Orang Asli's".
His responsibilities with FOCUSED include chairing the Management steering and oversight committees to establish sound financial policies and to implement operational goals with respect to fund raising, external liaison with foreign embassies, capital budgeting and corporate planning. His contributions also include formulating and evaluating strategies to impact policies on rural and urban community development. Dr. Shun is also responsible to ensure that the Report and Accounts are produced and audited in a timely manner to augment the level of professionalism given FOCUSED's transparency obligations to corporate, institutional and governmental donors.
