Most Western firms tend to rely on incremental innovation to differentiate in the market place. However, with the unprecedented shifts in the global economy (rise of emerging-market players, transformative technological shifts, changing customers, blurring industry boundaries etc), this strategy becomes risky. In a more hypercompetitive world, new strategic thinking is necessary, therefore the next pressing question is: how can we excel in business model innovation, which often entails radical changes, to renew our competitive advantage and disrupt our competition?

In this forum, we will first discuss what business model innovation is, what challenges most firms encounter and how we can resolve them, in particular by focusing on business ecosystems and the value network. Second, using the latest research, we will look at how globalising innovation, in particular from emerging economies, has become another relevant path to business model innovation. We will reflect on how to manage the institutional, competitive, organisational and cultural issues related to more global innovation.
