Henley DBA gets AMBA accreditation

The Henley Business School DBA programme has been awarded AMBA accreditation, only the fourth business school in the UK and eighth in the world to gain this prestigious accreditation.

The Henley Business School Doctor of Business Administration programme has been awarded AMBA accreditation, only the fourth business school in the UK and eighth in the world to gain this prestigious accreditation. The programme, which has now been running for around 21 years, is thought to be the most established in Europe with the highest number of graduates to its name.

Excellent structure

The Association of MBAs has granted this award after a rigorous process of examining every aspect of the MSc/DBA programme. They gave commendation to a number of facets of the programme which they felt give it real strength and prestige in the DBA market. One of these areas concerns the clear structure of the combined MSc and DBA, which enables candidates to develop their research skills and gain an exit award before going on to the research phase of their studies. AMBA's view of this was:

"The structure of the DBA, split between the MSc Business Management Research and the DBA thesis is highly regarded by students and offers good preparation for the rigour of DBA research and write-up."

The inclusion of development of individual competencies was also identified as a core strength. Programme members develop their strengths in a number of personal, research and consultancy areas to ensure that they build holistic capability around their specialist research area.

International programme

Another area identified for specific praise was the partnership with the Rotman School of Management at the University of Toronto which they said "…has enhanced the profile of the Henley DBA and enriched the academic experience for both staff and students." This partnership was also noted as adding to the overall internationalisation of Henley Business School. This internationalisation is also demonstrated by the participation of current students from over 30 countries worldwide.

Supportive environment

The Henley DBA appeals to mature candidates from many walks of life, whether senior executives in organisations, independent consultants or members of academic institutions. Research Associates join a programme that takes their complicated and challenging working lives into account, providing a flexible programme which demands rigour in their research expertise, but also excellent support so that they can accommodate their studies around their busy working lives. The level of support on the programme, particularly through the mentoring in supervision support was also commended by AMBA. The learning environment and level of pastoral support are areas of the programme that make a real difference to participants.

Research Excellence

The MSc/DBA programme contributes to the research excellence of Henley Business School. The theses produced receive commendations from accrediting bodies and examiners alike. Our Programme Members have entered and won a number of prestigious research competitions Candidates and their theses are regularly praised as being of the highest quality by scholars with global reputations in their field. Research Associates are encouraged to take part in the activities of our active research centres. By conducting original research in their specialist area, candidates are able to further their careers and build expertise to contribute to grow competitive advantage and differentiate themselves in the marketplace.

Future plans

The Henley DBA will go from strength to strength with this latest award. Future plans include; offering specific research projects for prospective students to apply for, building stronger links with organisations for projects and sponsored places, further strategic partnerships to consolidate its global reach and of course strong ties with the other AMBA accredited schools to maintain and grow best practice in the delivery of the DBA.
