Professor Michael Ball, from Real Estate & Planning at Henley, was recently interviewed on BBC Radio 5 Live, casting doubt on the economic benefits of HS2 after examining the new government report that was released on 29 October 2013.

The report revealed that the expected benefits have been lowered, falling from £2.50 to £2.30 in benefits for every pound spent.

Based on his research, Professor Ball said that he was sceptical of the direct benefits that would be gained from HS2, and of regional transport’s ability to create more jobs and boost the economy.   He said that the government needed to be clear on the amount of wealth generated from this one piece of infrastructure.
