University of Reading Phd Conference 2014 – Three minute thesis competition, 1st July 2014

The annual three minute thesis competition is open to all PhD students across the University of Reading. This year it was won by Sarah Mitchell from the Marketing and Reputation team at Henley Business School. The idea of the competition is summarise your PhD in an engaging and entertaining three minute talk using one powerpoint slide. The twelve finalists then presented to the judging panel and an audience of 300.

Presenting information in a clear, coherent and concise way to those outside your field is one of the skills necessary for successful doctoral research. The Graduate School offered the opportunity for our researchers to showcase their work through the 3 minute thesis competition and through the poster competition, both bringing the chance to win recognition and £100.

Winner: Sarah Mitchell, Phd Student, Marketing and Reputation

The adrenilin rush of looking up and seeing all those people and knowing how fast the clock is ticking was certainly a challenge but very enjoyable (afterwards). I loved having the chance to share my work with a wider audience. It really helped me develop the skill of explaining my research without jargon to a non-specialist audience in a succinct way. Listening to the other finalists also gave a real sense of the depth and breadth of the research being undertaken at Reading.
