Ann Parkinson was quoted in the Financial Times on 24 April 2014 in relation to cutting headcount but not expectations of performance.

Ann made the following points:

  • Cutting headcount leads to people feeling it will be me next, and leads to stress, burnout and disengagement
  • If it is to improve profits rather necessity there is no moral case and will affect morale, reputation and customer relations
  • If cuts are necessary then involve people in redesigning the work to make it manageable
  • Treat people with honesty and respect and give them some autonomy
  • People will remember how they have been treated in hard times and leave when times change.
