Dr Lucy Newton to present a paper at the Business History Conference 2014
17 February 2014
Dr Lucy Newton will be presenting a paper at the annual Business History Conference in Frankfurt next month.
Dr Lucy Newton, of International Business and Strategy, will be presenting a paper at the annual Business History Conference in Frankfurt next month. The theme for the conference will be "The Virtues and Vices of Business — A Historical Perspective" and it will take place from 13-16 March 2014. The conference will ask questions like ‘Is business good or bad, or both?’ and ‘Does business serve private or public interests, or both?’. A range of social science theories provide different answers to these questions and by implication, different ideas about the role of the state in creating the good society. Conference participants will attempt to address these issues from a historical and empirical perspective.
Lucy will present on Friday 14 March in the ‘Challenges of Banking Expansion’ session with her paper titled ‘The virtues and vices of branch banking: joint-stock banks and the spread of banking in England and Wales, 1826-1884’.
