First ever Enhancement Week receives fantastic reception

The first week of November saw the launch of the first ever Enhancement Week, which gave students to opportunity to attend a range of events including careers sessions, field trips and a mentoring masterclass.

It also gave students the chance to learn about the alumni network both in theory and in practice.

On Tuesday 4th, more than 250 undergraduate and postgraduate students gathered for two panel sessions of ‘Alumni Question Time’, featuring:

  • Michael Berring, Consultative Sales Graduate at O2 ( MSc in International Business)
  • Jack Borg-Cardona, Senior Security Architect at Symantec ( MSc in International Management and Business)
  • Christina Sadler-Smith, Trauma Territory Sales Consultant at Johnson & Johnson ( MSc in Marketing and International Management)
  • Fiona McClure, Management Consultant for Deloitte ( MSc International Management)
  • Abhishek Mandal,  who recently completed a consultancy project at Marks & Spencer’s Head Office in London and is graduating in December (MBA)
  • Thiemo Willms, Analyst for Jones Lang LaSalle (MSc in International Business)
  • Lesley Zhang, Chief Financial Officer for Rentez-Vous (MBA)

The students took the opportunity to ask the panel members about what life was really like after graduation, with questions ranging from soft skills, to selecting a career and the realities of visa restrictions for international students.

“As I don't have any work experience and my degrees are in very different areas (IT, Financial and Management), the Alumni Question Time panel opened my mind to the possibilities out there, and showed me that I don't have to worry about jobs, because I will find one – and hopefully a good one. I learned, in both events, that to get a job you have to get noticed, show passion and to sell yourself.”

Vania Spencer, current student, MSc Information Management & Systems

“As an international student, I always appreciate the support and advice offered by the Henley alumni and thought I should take this chance to give back. I reflected on my life-changing journey with Henley and shared how I solved issues such as time management. Hopefully my advice will be helpful for current students.”

On Thursday, the students had the chance to practice their networking skills at the Alumni & Student Mixer event, held at 3M’s stunning new Customer Innovation Centre with over 100 fellow students and alumni.

As well as meeting new alumni, students had the chance to explore the Customer Innovation Centre, a showcase of some of the fascinating products 3M produces, from the classic Post-it Note to floating concrete and cutting-edge microneedle technology.

Wynne Lewis, Technical Director, 3M UK & Ireland gave an inspirational talk on how 3M has fostered such a strong innovative culture, and how a simple product modification can result in hundreds of marketable products.

Watch a video of the full presentation.

This event was only made possible through the generous support of 3M and Henley MBA programme member Sean Appleton (3M Marketing Manager, Oil & Gas Business and Advanced Materials Division) who facilitated 3M’s hosting of the evening.

After the success of this first Enhancement Week, we are already looking forward to the next set of sessions, which will take place in February 2015.
