Henley moves into Malaysia

In September Henley Business School welcomed our first group of students taking a BSc programme in Finance and Business Management at our current facilities in Jahor Bahru at the University of Reading Malaysia.

The geographical reach of Henley Business School will extend even further as we open our doors in Malaysia.  In September we will welcome our first group of students taking a BSc programme in Finance and Business Management at our current facilities in Jahor Bahru at the University of Reading Malaysia (UoRM).

In August 2011, the University of Reading was formally invited by the Ministry of Higher Education Malaysia to establish a campus in Malaysia, for the provision and award of undergraduate and postgraduate degrees in three thematic subject areas: built environment; business and law; and science, including pharmacy. This was part of helping achieve the Government target of 70% of the population reaching tertiary education by 2020.

The invitation reflects University of Reading’s expertise in these three fields, all of which are seen by the Malaysian Government as being relevant to the country’s future. As a university in the top 1% of universities in the world (Times Higher Education rankings 2013-14) and in the top quartile of UK universities, the University of Reading was one of a select few UK universities invited to establish operations in Malaysia – each chosen for its reputation in specific subject areas.

Henley Business School, with its triple accreditation, is strongly placed in the south-east Asian market.  We will be delivering programmes across a range of business topics including finance, investment banking, real estate, international business, marketing and accounting in the coming years.   In the executive education field programmes in coaching, leadership and our world recognised MBA programme are planned.

This is all part of Henley’s international strategy to take advantage of the growth in demand for education in the region. Equally important are our connections with businesses in different fields. These are mutually beneficial relationships with leading employers in Malaysia and around the world, including Thomson Reuters, Standard Chartered, HSBC, Petronas and KPJ Healthcare. We will be providing a source of high-quality graduates, meeting the Malaysian government’s aims of building a better qualified workforce and, at the same time, the needs of the surrounding region.

In 2015 Henley will be moving into a brand new 20 acre campus which UoRM is building at EduCity Iskandar, near to Johor Bahru.  It is within 60 minutes’ drive of Central Singapore and within easy reach of Kuala Lumpur.

EduCity is a 600-acre education hub comprising of universities and higher education institutes, research and development centres. Its purpose is to provide world class educational facilities and to encourage partnerships between education and industry. Being developed by Iskandar Investment Berhad, EduCity represents significant economic investment in the region and is indicative of the demand for first class education in south-east Asia today.

Within the architecturally impressive, environmentally sound building, there will be a range of multimedia teaching rooms equipped with state-of-the-art learning technology to fit different courses and learning models. There will also be outstanding laboratories and a modern Learning Resource Centre – ensuring that students on all our courses have access to the resources they need and expect – and a conference centre, meaning international events and academic symposia can take place. Our smaller city-centre campus in the heart of Johor Bahru will be transformed into a centre for executive education.

Dr Susan Rose who will be leading the Henley team in Malaysia tells us:  “I am really excited to be involved in the start of a further chapter in Henley’s international development. We look forward to welcoming people from Malaysia and across the region to our new campus where they will benefit from a world-class learning experience.”
