Claire Fenton wins Lecturer Excellence Award

Claire Fenton, Lecturer in Accountancy and Business, receives the prestigious Reading University Students’ Union Lecturer Excellence Award.

The Reading University Students’ Union Lecturer Excellence Awards are given annually, just one for each of the University’s faculties. The awards:-

“aim to recognise members of University of Reading staff who display excellent and innovative teaching practice. They acknowledge those who the students believe have gone above and beyond their expectations, tirelessly working to improve the delivery of the teaching and learning experience for students.”

The winner of the 2015 Henley Business School Lecturer Excellence Award is Claire Fenton, Lecturer in Accountancy and Business, from Business Informatics, Systems and Accounting,

On her receiving the award, Claire commented:-

“The key to teaching is to enjoy it. The key to enjoying it is to communicate and listen to your students. I always think, if you can explain your actions (how you structured a course, what is being included in the assessment, that 9am isn’t your favourite time to teach either) and justify them, then that is enough for students as it shows that you have thought about it. If you asked me about how I felt about winning this award, there is only one word that comes to mind; humble. So really I am writing this to thank all my students, for making a job feel more like a hobby and putting up with me in class.”

The award was formally given by RUSU Education Officer Sara Chandran (see photograph). The citation states that: “Claire’s effective and engaging teaching style makes her lectures a pleasure to attend and something to look forward to. She also shows genuine interest and concern for everyone’s performance which motivates students to continually improve.”
