Leadership partnership provides foundation for a prosperous and sustainable future for Oman

Henley Business School and the Diwan of Royal Court of Oman were announced as a finalist in the Executive Development category at the European Foundation for Management Development 2015 Excellence in Practice Awards (EiP).

Henley Business School and the Diwan of Royal Court of Oman were announced as a finalist in the Executive Development category at the European Foundation for Management Development 2015 Excellence in Practice Awards (EiP).

The Diwan of Royal Court acts as the interface between His Majesty the Sultan of Oman, his government, society and international relations. In today’s complex international and regional environment the need was recognised to develop its leaders in preparation for future challenges and opportunities.

Unlike neighbouring countries, Oman has less extensive oil reserves and is implementing a programme of economic diversification into sectors including tourism, logistics and agriculture, to reduce its dependency on oil income. The partnership between Henley and the Diwan aims to lay the foundations for a prosperous and sustainable future for Oman by supporting leadership development of senior management to enable them to deliver on national projects and targets including: growth of target industry sectors; developing micro, small and medium enterprises; developing the national talent pool to ensure there is enough Omani talent with the capabilities, skills and experience for the future; and engaging with the private sector to support the national target of 500,000 Omanis employed in the private sector by 2023.

In partnership, the Institute of the Capability Development – The Diwan of Royal Court, Sultanate of Oman and Henley Business School designed and developed a tailored and culturally sensitive programme to develop leadership skills including: assessing key challenges and opportunities for the Diwan, creativity, solutions development and evaluation approaches, strategic communications and reputation management.

The programme is already showing signs of delivering measurable organisational impact at individual, team and organisational levels. Measurement of impact shows an improvement in team spirit and belief that Oman can successfully diversify its economy, develop future leaders and has a positive future. Participants have also commented that the learning and development activities have supported improvement of professional relationships, greater collaboration, better planning and organisation, an enhanced reputation for the Diwan and a clearer focus on the long-term vision for Oman as a nation. Ultimately, the real impact of the programme will be seen in decades to come, as Henley and the Diwan work together to support continuing development and pave the way for the future generation of strategic leaders.

Henley and the Diwan’s recognition in the EiP Awards reinforces both Henley’s position as a world-class provider of executive education and the impact of the Institute of Capability Development’s investment in leadership learning. It also demonstrates the judges’ recognition of the team work between the two institutions, the strong business impact and operational excellence of the delivery of the learning and development programme.
