REP's MSc Real Estate Finance students have just returned from a week long field trip to Toronto. The field trip, led by Programme Director Professor Simon Stevenson, is a core component of the programme allowing the students to visit a major global city and adds to the extensive exposure the students obtain throughout the year to the real estate and financial markets in London. Previous trips have been to New York (2012), Singapore (2013) and Hong Kong (2014).
Canadian investors and financial institutions are playing an increasingly important role internationally and during the week the class visited and heard from a wide variety of them. These included Canadian Pension Plan Investment Board, Oxford Properties, Brookfield Financial, Great West Life Assurance (Canada Life), Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce and Euro Pacific Canada. As well as extensive discussions concerning investment strategies in the direct property market the week also included content specifically relating to Canadian REITs and the commercial real estate debt markets in Canada.
The schedule also featured overviews of the Toronto and Canadian markets by Avison Young and CBRE and site visits to a number of properties, including Yorkdale, Canada's largest Shopping Mall and a new development occupied by Royal Bank of Canada. A visit to Niagara allowed the class to witness the extensive tourism related development of the area as well as experience the falls themselves. The class also enjoyed an evening watching the Toronto Blue Jays, in a thrilling 9th innings finale the Blue Jays beat the Miami Marlins 4-3. The Blue Jays have now been adopted as the official baseball team of the MSc Real Estate Finance programme!
