Abstract:

The creation of the European Monetary Union (EMU) has provided attractive internal diversification opportunities for ‘insider’ multinational enterprises (MNEs). We investigate the impact of regional integration on MNE strategy by analyzing Belgian MNEs’ entry modes in foreign markets, both EMU and non-EMU ones. Our analysis demonstrates that the EMU has dramatically altered the impact of national institutional risk on insider MNE entry mode choices. Our findings help explain how regional integration has triggered the ‘death of institutional distance’. At the same time, the conventional predictions of mainstream international business theory remain valid in the context of MNE strategies outside of the EMU.
