Billed as a talk that raised the question about the link between Dolly Parton, Skiing and BAE Systems this was the fifth in the ‘Talks on Enterprise Development’ series at the Henley Business School on Monday 16 May 2016.

The ‘Talks on Enterprise Development’ series puts the spotlight on leadership and engaging SMEs and showcases successful SMEs leaders who share their personal stories of developing high growth businesses, the challenges they faced and how they dealt with them, achievements, lessons learnt and their thoughts about the future.

Tom spoke with great enthusiasm and pride about the story of Accesso, a company that is delivering technology solutions to the leisure, entertainment and cultural markets and driving better customer experiences and how over the last five years it had grown from a company valued at £10m to one whose share price has grown strongly and today the company is worth over £250m.

Tom who has been CEO of Accesso since 2010 has a vision to grow the business to become a business valued at $1bn within the next 3 years and the first unicorn in the supply chain to this expanding industry. After the talk no one is in any doubt about Tom delivering on vision.

Tom highlighted three important themes underpinning the success of Accesso. First, hire the best and let them do their job by not telling them how to do it. It’s easy to understand when listening to Tom why people at Accesso are the driving force of success. Second, go after the market and recognize that it is changing and make some disruptive choices. Tom saw the opportunity to consolidate and has grown the business by acquisition and is not shy to invest, invest and invest more. Third keep your promises and in particular do what you told your investors what you would do. Tom does all Investor Relations himself believing he can tell the story better than anyone else. Listening to Tom we would agree!

This is what members of the audience had to say about Tom’s talk:
‘I like Tom’s straight talking approach and clarity of thought and purpose. Great insights and inspiring’ Bhuvan Satwah, Director Thens Consulting

‘Excellent talk from Tom – Fascinating insights, great quality speaker’ Adrian Goodall, Partner SM2E

‘A fresh and engaging personal story, pure joy to experience – I’d even love to hear it again!’ Nigel Penn-Simkins, MD Article 10 Design Ltd

We are really appreciative of the time Tom gave up to speak on campus especially in view of his global customer commitments and international travel.

The next talk in the series will be announcement later this summer. Stay in touch and look out for the announcement at www.henley.ac.uk/henleycentreforentrepreneurship
