How did you find out about the partnership programme options offered by Henley?

Macau University of Science and Technology organized a series of lectures and informational sessions to introduce us to this exchange program with Henley.

What kind of activities, either in-person or online, were organised by your previous institution in order to support your journey from applying to arriving?

They conducted informative lectures and meetings specifically designed to guide students through the application process and provide insights into studying abroad. They also facilitated communication between students and UoR, helping us establish contact and ensuring a smooth transition. Additionally, they provided essential documents for the visa application.

When you first arrived, how did you feel settling in as an international student?

When I first arrived, settling in as an international student was a relatively smooth process. Thanks to the well-organized and welcoming environment, I was able to adjust quickly. The university provided numerous ice-breaking activities during the fresher week, which helped me connect with fellow students and build a sense of community. Additionally, the student union and accommodation services were extremely helpful and considerate, providing support and guidance throughout my transition. Their assistance made me feel supported and ensured that I had everything I needed to settle in comfortably. Overall, the combination of engaging activities, supportive services, and a welcoming atmosphere made my experience as an international student a positive one from the start.

How have you found making friends?

Making friends as an international student has been a unique and sometimes challenging experience. Adjusting to a new culture and different backgrounds can initially create a sense of culture shock and potential misunderstandings. However, I have learned that stepping out of my comfort zone and actively engaging with others is crucial to building meaningful connections. By actively seeking opportunities to interact with fellow students, participating in social activities, and joining clubs or societies, I have been able to overcome initial barriers and form friendships. It's important to approach these interactions with an open mind and a willingness to learn from others' perspectives. Although there may be occasional conflicts or misunderstandings along the way, embracing diversity and actively engaging with people has enriched my study experience and allowed me to build a diverse network of friends.

What have you enjoyed most at the University?

I have truly cherished the breath-taking landscape that surrounds the university. The lush greenery, serene gardens, and picturesque views have been a constant source of inspiration and tranquillity for me. It’s on of my favourite activities to take a walk alongside the Whiteknights lake.

How does the UK teaching style compare to your home country?

The UK teaching style differs from my home country in several ways. One significant difference is that courses in the UK typically involve a variety of learning activities within a single module. Unlike my country, where lectures are the main form of instruction, UK modules may include lectures, workshops, seminars, and other interactive sessions. This diverse approach allows for a more comprehensive and engaging learning experience. This flexible and multifaceted teaching style in the UK promotes active learning, critical thinking, and effective communication skills. It has been a valuable and enriching experience to adapt to this dynamic educational approach.

Are you involved in any clubs or societies? If yes, what are they and how do you like them?

I’m currently a member of the LGBTQ society and Lindyhop society. They have regular events for me to learn something new while making friends, I like them very much.

How have you found Reading as a town to live in?

It's a small but beautiful town with great connections to London. I appreciate the convenience of being able to travel easily to the capital. The town also boasts excellent shopping malls, providing a diverse and enjoyable retail experience. The local community is lovely. People are friendly and welcoming, and there are many events that bring people together.

Are you living in university or private accommodation? Please tell us more about your experience.

I'm currently living in Wantage Hall, one of the university accommodations. I've had a great experience here so far. Wantage Hall has a fascinating history, which adds to its charm. The price of the accommodation is fair, and I find it to be a good value for the amenities provided. The dining hall is particularly beautiful and offers a pleasant dining experience. Most people in the hall are friendly, and it's been nice to connect with fellow residents. However, I must admit that there can be some noise at times, which is to be expected in a lively student environment. Overall, I'm quite satisfied with my stay in Wantage Hall.

What advice would you give to prospective partnership students?

Keep an open mind and embrace new experiences. Show respect and appreciation for different cultures. Step out of your comfort zone to grow and learn. Socialize with a diverse range of people. Join societies and clubs to engage in activities you enjoy and meet like-minded individuals.

What are your plans once you’ve graduated?

I don’t have plans yet but I would like to join some internship programs to enhance my experience.
