Description

Recent events – COVID-19, the wars in Ukraine and Gaza – plus the growing impact of climate change, are all teaching us that organisations can be significantly impacted by unpredictable events, anywhere in the world. Yet we continue to run most organisations as if they were existing in a stable and predictable environment. We can be very adept at building organisations with efficiency as the core principle but, paradoxically, these approaches are placing organisations at increasing risk. We need to 're-imagine' how organisations function, how they think about performance, how they drive innovation and how they manage people and teams in a way that will create the new adaptive organisations of the future.

Based on extensive research that underpins a series of books by Dr Mark Powell and Jonathan Gifford (My Steam Engine is Broken, Machiavellian Intelligence, Perform to Win, and The Five Principles of Performance Thinking), this full-day session will explore the 10 paradoxes inherent in how most organisations function and the challenges these present in driving performance in an increasingly complex and interconnected world. We will look at how organisations need to change to succeed and adapt, and also explore how individuals need to think differently about what they do themselves to be successful in different types of organisations.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of the session, you will:

  • have a different perspective on how organisations need to think differently to drive performance in a complex and unpredictable world
  • think differently about what you need to do, as an individual, to be successful in most modern organisations
  • have taken time out to uncover some uncomfortable truths and some interesting new ideas, and you will forget what you think you know and look at the market, your business and your role with fresh eyes
