Description
In an increasingly complex world, there are many demands on us; demands that can often seem relentless at times. In organisations, we see increasing levels of chronic stress and burnout. According to data, in 2021, only 21% of employees felt engaged with what they were doing at work. In the ‘always-on’ culture, busyness is valued and we strive to be productive and perform well. Yet when is striving to be productive, counterproductive? What are the long-term costs of the always-on culture? This session begins to explore new ideas about how we can use a biological rather than a psychological approach in our understanding of human beings to unlock energy, creativity and focus. We examine what makes you, you. We look at both brains and bodies, and explore the question: is it possible to maximise your performance and wellbeing at the same time?
Learning outcomes
By the end of this session, you will have learned:
- How stress is often viewed as a weakness in organisations but how it is simply the body’s adaptive response to changing conditions or circumstances in the environment that indicate a perceived threat
- Why the ‘always on’ culture has negative implications for our health (and what we can do about this)
- How the best leaders create the conditions that enable people to optimize performance and wellbeing
Emma Russell
Emma Russell is an executive coach and consultant with a special interest in how biology influences human behaviour. Prior to coaching and consulting, she held senior leadership roles in finance, commercial and change management. Emma has worked across Europe and Asia, leading large multicultural teams. She holds an Executive MBA (Dean’s List) from INSEAD.
A biologist by degree, Emma has returned to her interest in the subject through applied research, teaching, writing and coaching. Her specialty in understanding the biological basis of leadership allows her to understand and support leaders to improve their performance, health and wellbeing.
Emma lives in the UK with her husband and two children. When she’s not buried deep in academic papers or scientific books, she enjoys cooking, playing games and exploring nature with her children.
