Abstract:
The purpose of this paper is twofold. First, to apply the theoretical framework and empirical modeling of drivers of multinational enterprises (MNEs) scaling-up process. Second, to analyze how the region’s foreign knowledge sources affect the propensity and modes of scaling -up between domestic and foreign MNEs and the role of MNE ownership in this relationship. We use panel data for 44,256 UK-based foreign and 21,246 domestic MNEs during 2004-2017 to provide new evidence on how explicit and implicit foreign knowledge affects scaling-up in sales, market share and productivity. Implications for policymakers and managers of domestic and foreign MNEs are developed.
