Abstract

The paper discusses the role of prediction in management scholarship. It then employs the contribution of Stephen Hymer in IB to first highlight instances where his perspective has helped predict future developments and the extent to which it is applicable, hence it could have been employed and should be employed to help explicate more recent developments such as platforms, Big Tech, the sharing economy, and unicorns. It concludes that by building in the shoulders of other giants, the Hymer perspective has been and can be successful in predicting and that prediction should be part and parcel of management scholarship, alongside analysis and prescription (that they already do).
