Abstract:
We examine the knowledge integration strategies that lead firms adopt to effectively orchestrate the distributed capabilities and learning processes in the global production and innovation systems that undergird global value chains (GVCs). Building on the systems integration literature, we hypothesize that lead firms’ orchestration of GVCs displays three fundamental characteristics: (a) a technological scope that is wider than that of its partners; (b) a global knowledge connectedness that is broader than that of its partners; and (c) innovation that disproportionately draws from basic science & technology. By combining a unique longitudinal dataset on formal network linkages in the aircraft engine industry with firm-specific patent data during the period 2002-2014, we provide evidence in line with our hypotheses.
