Description
Leaders need to take the time to invest in and protect their own health and wellbeing – and this is rarely high on their agenda.
In this session, we will share and explore insights from acceptance and mindfulness approaches, which help us to unhook from unwanted thoughts and to become present and accepting of life’s happenings. We will also take lessons from compassionate mind training, including cultivating self-compassion and self-acceptance, as well as working with a range of cognitive strategies and noticing thinking biases that can trip us up and be demotivating.
We will also have a word with our inner critic – yes, we all have one! – and instead, cultivate each of the five pillars of wellbeing (positive emotions, engagement, relationships, meaning, and feelings of achievement) and other options for staying or becoming more resilient.
Learning Outcomes
By the end of this session, you will have learned about:
- the six pivots of psychological flexibility, and how to make them
- the three flows of compassion, and how to increase them
- the five pillars of wellbeing, and how to strengthen them
Who is this for
This session is for busy leaders, managers and innovators seeking the latest insights into how to stay healthy and well into the future.
It is also for cynics and sceptics of the wellbeing movement who wish to critically engage with the science around happiness and flourishing.
Dr Tim Anstiss

Tim Anstiss is a medical doctor, educator, coach and coach trainer. After working at various NHS jobs, including in cardiology, orthopaedics, psychiatry and occupational health, Tim developed and led an MSc in Exercise and Behavioural Medicine at Thames Valley University. Tim has trained thousands of healthcare professionals and others in motivational interviewing and health coaching, has been involved in several national and international behaviour change initiatives and has written several book chapters on different coaching approaches (e.g. acceptance and commitment based, compassion focussed and wellbeing coaching). Having – like millions of people around the world – experienced an episode of depression, Tim is particularly curious about what individuals can do to protect and improve their mental health and wellbeing over time. Driven to find an answer, Tim has developed a unique, ten-step path combining modern science with ancient wisdom.
