Abstract:
Consumers allocate attention before they allocate money. While consumers used to rely on search engines for identifying and screening options, they increasingly turn to AI answer engines such as ChatGPT which act on their behalf to source information, shortlist options, and make recommendations. Therefore, organizations now must win attention from AI answer engines first. In this paper, we ask what drives this AI attention and provide some initial evidence based on a large-scale archival database plus an experimental design.
