Description
In this session, Steve will prime the conversation by sharing some key lessons from his work as a consultant, supervisor and coach. He will outline three of the biggest myths in change work that rarely get talked about yet have a huge impact, and suggest what we can do better.
The questions we will explore include:
- Why do organisations – and leadership teams – continue to be beguiled by quick-fix, silver-bullet solutions to complex problems that don’t exist?
- What fuels the collusive behaviours between buyers and sellers of such things?
- In particular, what drives the need for certainty?
- And how does this fuel three of the most damaging myths in change work:
-the myth of fixability
-the myth of acceptance
-the myth of change capability building
Expect:
- provocation
- useful discomfort in service of learning
- chewy conversations with other participants
Learning Outcomes
This session will help you:
- think more deeply about change and change leadership
- reduce your dependency on the purveyors of silver bullets
- come up with a net wise move in response to your own organisational change challenge
Who is this for?
Anyone in organisations involved in leading, managing or commissioning change, those looking to outsource change, people responsible for developing change capability, those responsible for ensuring change succeeds in organisations (e.g. OD, org des, change teams, digital TX, HR) and anyone on the end of change initiatives who wishes they were less infuriating.
Steve Hearsum
Steve supports and challenges clients to find their edge and stretch when what they are after is more than simply ‘better sameness’. He comes with an intention to create useful discomfort in service of learning and has been told he has ‘a knack of not letting people off the hook, without leaving them feeling like they’re on the hook’.
The author of No Silver Bullet: Bursting the Bubble of the Organisational Quick Fix, Steve focuses on building leadership and change capability through leadership practice, consulting and change practice and culture.
As a qualified consulting and coaching supervisor and experienced coach, Steve creates supervisory spaces for leaders, internal and external consultants and change agents to deepen and develop their practice in service of supporting them to show up with more impact.
Steve is a board member for the Tavistock Institute of Human Relations and served as co-chair of the Organisation Development Network Europe for three years. He has an eclectic background, having worked in telecoms, spending several years at The Guardian developing new business models and revenue streams before transitioning into an internal consulting role. Periods of consulting independently were interspersed by four-and-a-half years at the Roffey Park Institute, where he launched the first-ever digital leadership programme at a UK management/leadership education centre.
