Professor Huse is an internationally recognised scholar in corporate governance, best known for his work on value creating boards and board processes. His research shifts attention from monitoring and control to boards as collaborative, value-creating teams, drawing on theories of team production, relational capital and board dynamics.

He has published extensively on boards, gender and governance and has held visiting and chaired positions across Europe. Professor Huse is also known for his impact-driven and polymorphic research approach, combining theory, practice and long-term engagement with boards and decision-makers.

The topic of this presentation is 'Value Creating Boards and the Extended Team Production Theory: an Autoethnography'. This seminar will explore the background and implications of the Value Creating Board (VCB) research stream, the Extended Team Production Theory (ETPT) and the Value Chain Approach (VCaB), applying an autoethnographic approach.

Professor Huse's research has a unique longitudinal perspective, following a storyline from the 1980s up to the present day. The stories start with experiences from practice and end with how the concepts now are important for board development and executive training.

In his research, Professor Huse concludes that VCB, ETPT and VCaB are directly linked. The VCB research stream and the ETPT are two sides of the same coin: the conceptual and the theoretical. The ETPT is presented as a theory that may challenge agency theory for the definitions and understanding of boards of directors.

The ontological positions of the ETPT and agency theory differ significantly. ETPT has a focus on value creation, while agency theory has a focus on control and compliance. This has consequences for research and practice. As such, Professor Huse proposes that VCB and ETPT today in practice dominate the logic among leading management consultants like McKinsey and Boston Consulting Group, as well as providers of top-level board training institutions such as the Institut Européen d'Administration des Affaires, Harvard Business School and Instituto de Estudios Superiores de la Empresa.

The seminar is for an internal audience and will be held on 6 May 2026, 12:30pm, in room LG01 of the Henley Business School building, Whiteknights campus. For those unable to attend in person there is also the option to dial in remotely via Microsoft Teams. If you are interested in joining, please contact Alex Baker on a.j.baker@henley.ac.uk
