The Dunning Centre for International Business at Henley Business School, University of Reading, is pleased to announce that the Alan Rugman Fellow for the 2024-25 academic year is Pavida Pananond.

Pavida Pananond is a Professor of International Business at Thammasat Business School, Thammasat University, where she has taught since completing her graduate studies at McGill University, Canada (MBA) and the University of Reading, England (PhD). Pavida’s research focuses on global strategy, with a particular interest in how companies from emerging markets expand internationally. She also studies the governance of global industries and the upgrading of emerging market firms within global value chains.

Her research has been widely published, with articles appearing in leading journals such as the California Management Review and Global Strategy Journal. Pavida also serves on editorial boards for several international academic journals, including her role as Area Editor for the Journal of International Business Policy. Pavida’s influence extends beyond academia, as she frequently contributes opinion editorials in publications like Bangkok Post and Nikkei Asia. Her insights have been sought after by international media outlets, including Al Jazeera, BBC, Bloomberg, Channel News Asia, and the Financial Times. Additionally, Pavida has conducted policy research for international organizations such as the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific and the World Health Organization.

Since 2017, Pavida has served as an Honorary Adviser to the Asia New Zealand Foundation, an authority in helping New Zealanders understand and engage with Asia. She also holds a corporate board position at Precious Shipping Public Company Limited, Thailand’s leading dry bulk carrier. Her expertise is regularly shared at national and international forums and conferences.

A committee consisting of Mark Casson, James Walker, Alain Verbeke, Davide Castellani, and Rajneesh Narula reviewed the applications for the fellowship. Pavida’s appointment as the Alan Rugman Fellow underscores her significant contributions to international business scholarship, particularly in emerging market strategies, a topic closely aligned with the late Professor Alan Rugman’s work.

The Alan Rugman Visiting Fellowship was established in 2015 to honour the legacy of Professor Alan Rugman. This annual award is open to scholars whose work reflects Rugman’s research interests. The fellowship is made possible in part by a generous donation from Helen Rugman in memory of her late husband.

Visiting fellows are expected to engage with the Centre’s academic community, give at least one seminar, and spend time in residence during the academic year (between September and June).
