Garry has enjoyed a variety of senior management roles: marketing director, strategy consultant, head of communications and client services director. His early career was spent in European brand marketing in FMCG after which he became a strategy consultant for KPMG Consulting. He launched Chiron in 2001 and has worked with Henley Business School for a number of years on boards and risk.

Garry offers an innovative approach to leadership risk. He brings latest thinking on behavioural economics to bear on risk: treating it as a business opportunity not simply a threat; an essential element of future strategy, not merely a compliance obligation.

Risk governance is not the same as risk management: a board is responsible for setting appetite for risk – which will differ between private and public sector organisations. Risk in the boardroom is about setting an appropriate level of daring for an unknowable future. It is thus about uncertainty.

Boards need to identify risk correctly and to communicate effectively what it means to different stakeholder audiences: in short whether it is a warning or an invitation. For regulators, risk is primarily about control of threats; for investors it is about the opportunity for gain as return on investment.
