In his role as Director of Performance Team Development for England Rugby, Nigel has the task of challenging, supporting and developing performance team members on an individual and collective basis to create a team environment where everyone can thrive. Before joining the Rugby Football Union, Nigel supported the culture and performance learning at British Swimming and was a member of Team GB at the 2016 Rio Olympic Games in his role of Learning Director.

Nigel completed the Professional Certificate in Executive Coaching at Henley and has designed and facilitated programmes for several organisations through his ongoing work at Henley Business School. He has supported the development of leadership and coaching through his collaboration with the English Institute of Sport and UK Sport.

After retiring as a player in 1999, Nigel began a coaching career that included time with England and in the Gallagher Premiership. He believes in the saying ‘you owe it to your players to be the best coach you can possibly be’ and has worked through the coaching awards, receiving Level 5 status. In 2005, Nigel qualified for the UK Sport Elite Coach programme, working alongside the UK’s best Olympic coaches. He is an experienced presenter and keynote speaker and has worked as a coach and mentor for Winter Olympic and Summer Olympic sports, Premier League Football and the Rugby Football Union.

As an athlete, Nigel competed for 16 years with the Bath club, winning 10 National Cups, six league titles and the club became the first English winners of the European Cup. In 1984, he won the first of his 20 caps for England in an international career that spanned over 13 years. He played in several overseas tours and in two World Cup tournaments reaching the final in 1991. In 1994, Nigel won the England Rugby ‘Player of the Year’ award and, in 1997, was a member of the successful British and Irish Lions team tour of South Africa, where he captained the team on two occasions.
