Abstract:
Recent years have seen an increasing use of sanctions, which are nonmilitary coercive measures imposed by a country or a group of countries against another country, organization, or individuals. These sanctions can disrupt international business environment on short notice, change the rules of the game, and force firms to alter their business strategies, in extreme cases even to cease entire operations or business relationships. I n this Perspective paper, we introduce the concept of sanctions as a key aspect of the institutional framework for international business, the variety of sanctions seen in recent years. We discuss responses by firms facing sanctions, and explore theoretical explanation from the perspective of three popular perspectives: institution-based view, resource-based view, and resource dependency theory. On this basis, we outline a research agenda for the new reality of intensified sanctions confronting international business.
