Abstract: Drawing on Dr Goode's research experience to date, this paper will explore his research projects in the 'green' space including on the Green Belt and urban greening. It will reflect upon the challenge of combining planning research which is both interdisciplinary but also has policy impact.
Bio: Dr Charles Goode is an Assistant Professor in Urban and Regional Planning at the University of Birmingham. He is a Geographer and trained Planner with research and teaching interests in strategic planning, community involvement, housing supply/affordability, urban regeneration and planning history. His ESRC-funded doctoral research focused on the relationship urban containment policies, housing crises and planning systems and is published in a range of practitioner and academic outlets including a Monograph The Green Belt, Housing Crises and Planning Systems published by Routledge in 2025. Another strand of Charles' research is green infrastructure and the repurposing of urban centres including BBSRC-funded impact research in the West Midlands. Charles is very enthusiastic about strengthening the links between academia and planning practice as reflected in his membership of the RTPI West Midlands Regional Activities and Young Planner Committees.
