Dr Cath Jackson Visits the Department for Real Estate and Planning
7 March 2019
We were very pleased to welcome Dr Cath Jackson last week who gave a seminar entitled “Investment decision-making under economic policy uncertainty”.
It is widely established that economic policy uncertainty (EPU) affects investment decisions and performance, yet research in this area has overlooked the direct property investment market. Based on collaborative research with Dr Allison Orr, Cath reported on new insights and findings using a news-based measure of EPU in the UK. The research suggests that EPU is an important risk factor for direct property investments, with pricing implications. However, there appears to be a reciprocal element, and this work highlights the importance for policy-makers to understand this complex and bi-directional relationship where indecision can undermine investment confidence, thus causing investment market volatility, and in turn raising EPU.
