Henley Business School and The Sunday Times are delighted to announce that Rachel Scully, a Geoscience Technology Manager at Shell, has been named as the winner of The Sunday Times Leaders Scholarship 2019.
The scholarship provides a fully-funded place - worth £17,900 - on Henley’s MA Leadership programme, which starts on 7 October.
Applicants were asked to submit a 600-word opinion piece entitled ‘How can leaders provide stability in unpredictable times?’ as well as 50-100 words explaining why they deserved the scholarship. The winning entry was selected from a shortlist by a judging panel, which included a member of the Business School faculty, a Sunday Times representative, and two independent judges.
Rachel’s winning essay discusses how the globalisation of markets and technology has made people more aware of the challenges we face in the workplace and during this current period of tumultuous socio-political events, leaders should be there to help, guide, coach and truly understand what team members need, while also being honest and open about their own needs and development. The essay can be read in full here.
In addition to her current role as GeoSigns Deployment and Support Manager at Shell, Rachel has over 20 years’ experience in the energy industry having worked overseas at major oil and gas companies for most of her career. On winning the scholarship she said:
“I am excited to be awarded the Sunday Times Leaders Scholarship, and to be honest somewhat nervous to be embarking on such an interesting new challenge while concurrently managing my job, family and personal pursuits. I am looking forward to being inspired by others, gaining new perspectives and to directly apply my learnings to achieve the goal of remaining relevant in a changing industry. Leadership at different levels shape our lives and careers and mine is no different, so this course is a great opportunity to improve as a leader and be able to leverage my transferable skills in the future rather than relying on my strong technical skills as in the past.”
