Overview

Enable leaders to identify where AI can create value and shape its responsible use across the organisation.

As organisations explore the potential of AI, leaders need to move beyond awareness to making informed, practical decisions. The AI Leadership – AI Strategy and Opportunity apprenticeship unit focuses on helping individuals understand the opportunities and limitations of AI, identify where it can add value and provide clear direction for its use.

Set within real organisational contexts, it builds the confidence to assess opportunities, engage stakeholders and support AI adoption in a way that is ethical, effective and aligned to business priorities. It also supports leaders to balance innovation with governance, ensuring AI initiatives deliver value while managing risk.

Through structured, work-based learning, participants develop a clear, practical approach to evaluating AI initiatives, aligning them to organisational goals and guiding their successful implementation.

Course structure

The course is delivered over six weeks, with five weeks of teaching (one module per week), followed by an assessment week.

Each weekly module includes:

6 hours of online learning, comprising:

  • A 4-hour interactive online workshop (including two breaks)
  • A 2-hour online Action Learning Session

Workshops are highly interactive, encouraging peer-to-peer learning through breakout rooms, alongside content delivered by the module convenor featuring current and relevant insights.

Action Learning Sessions will support critical thinking, reflection, collaboration, and practical problem-solving.

Over the five weeks of learning participants will explore:

Organisational Leadership: AI Strategy and Policy

Develop the strategic leadership capabilities needed to position AI as a driver of organisational performance. Learners will explore how to align AI ambitions with organisational goals, establish effective governance frameworks and create policies that support responsible adoption at scale.

Evaluating Opportunities for AI-Driven Improvement

Identify where AI can create the greatest impact. Learners will examine business challenges and opportunities, assess potential AI applications and build evidence-based cases for investment, balancing benefits, costs and risk.

Engaging Stakeholders

Successful AI adoption depends on people. This module explores how to engage stakeholders, build trust, manage resistance and create the organisational commitment needed to support AI-enabled change.

Preparing for Implementation: Assessing Viability and Risks

Move from strategy to action. Learners will evaluate operational readiness, workforce implications, ethical considerations and implementation risks to ensure AI initiatives are practical, responsible and sustainable.

Futureproofing: Monitoring Emerging Technologies and Trends

AI continues to evolve rapidly. Learners will develop approaches for scanning the horizon, evaluating emerging technologies and adapting organisational strategy to remain competitive in a changing digital landscape

Assessment - week six:

Learners will need to pass a skills test to demonstrate that they have acquired the skills and knowledge set out in the apprenticeship unit. They will write a report applying their learning to the AI challenge in their organisation. Employers will need to validate to confirm the learner has been successful.
