Overview

Our PhD in Marketing, offered within the Digital, Marketing, and Entrepreneurship (DME )department at Henley Business School (University of Reading), provides the expertise, skills, and confidence to excel in pioneering marketing research. Offering an in-depth research programme that explores both theoretical and applied aspects of marketing, the programme equips you for impactful careers in academia or industry.

To develop robust analytical and methodological skills, PhD candidates (based on a learning needs analysis), may be required to complete advanced content modules and/or doctoral research training. This learning, commonly completed in the foundation year, supports the pursuit of original research tailored to individual interests within the broad area of marketing. In the second year the PhD journey includes a Confirmation of Registration (CoR) assessment, where researchers present and defend a fully developed research proposal. If successful, the subsequent time is dedicated to i) development and completion of the research, ii) writing up and submission of the thesis, and completion of the viva voce examination. The ideal expectation is that full-time PhD researchers will submit the thesis by the end of their third year.

Researchers benefit from the expertise within the Henley Centre for Customer Management, which provides a rich environment for scholarly engagement, and offers researchers access to cutting-edge opportunities and developments in the field. This centre, alongside Henley Business School's long tradition of advancing research, provide a rich environment for scholarly engagement, offering access to cutting-edge research and opportunities to participate in international conferences that examine the latest developments in the field.

Throughout their studies, PhD candidates receive dedicated supervision from internationally renowned faculty, benefit from outstanding facilities and are part of a dynamic doctoral researcher community. The programme's comprehensive approach aims to equip graduates with the skills, critical and creative thinking, intellectual and professional capacities necessary for successful academic (or professional) careers in marketing and related fields.

3) Researcher Quality and Supervisor support (40%) – e.g. Does the researcher have existing skills / knowledge / data access? Has the researcher already engaged with the potential supervisory team? Are supervisors positive about the researchers fit (as a PhD researcher and/or possible departmental GTA).

After allocating their own studentships, departments are invited to submit two additional applications for school-level consideration, and three additional full-time PhD studentships are awarded (at Henley level) covering full-time PhD course fees and a stipend.

Current scholarships

Entry requirements

Applications for the 2026/27 academic year are closed. Applications for the 2027/28 academic year are open and due to close on 30 June 2027.

What is our expectation?

As part of your application process, you must submit:

  • Masters degree certificate and transcript. This must be at distinction or merit level from an internationally recognised university, and an equally strong undergraduate degree
  • Research proposal (see below)
  • Proof of English language proficiency (overall IELTS result of 7.0 with no individual elements scoring below 6.0)

Prospective PhD researchers are always required to provide a fully developed Research Proposal. An application will not normally be processed unless a proposal is included. Providing a fully developed Research Proposal shows personal engagement the topic, possible collaboration with Henley academics, and investment in problem scoping.

A normal PhD proposal includes:

  • An introduction; including the reasons why your studies may be relevant
  • A thorough literature review, evidence of awareness of theoretical and empirical work relevant to the research question - with the theoretical component being extremely important, because a PhD must demonstrate that it advances the body of knowledge
  • A clearly worked-out research question which is justified in terms of intellectual and, where appropriate, policy making or market relevance
  • A research design that is intended to answer the research question posed and its feasibility within the assigned timescale (i.e. 3 years).

Discussing your PhD research proposal

If you are interested in pursuing your PhD studies in a specific Henley department, and want to discuss your research proposal, please contact one of our members of staff active in the research area of your interest.

Applying for a PhD

Please remember, however, that no application will be processed until a formal application has been submitted to the university admissions department.

Please note that all PhD candidates are expected study full-time. It is only in exceptional circumstances that we offer part-time or distance learning PhDs. For part-time or distance options, please instead consider the Henley Doctor of Business Administration (DBA) programme. For this reason, we also do not currently offer an option for January entry.
