Overview

The Professional Certificate in Executive Coaching from Henley Business School is a part-time course that is normally taken over nine months. It is accredited by the International Coaching Federation (ICF), Association for Coaching (AC) and the European Mentoring & Coaching Council (EMCC).

The programme attracts a diverse range of participants, from those wishing to start a new career in coaching to senior leaders aiming to embed a coaching culture within their organisations.

You can choose between in-person and live-online delivery as well as full-day workshops or shorter sessions. You will also need to undertake a minimum of 20 hours of coaching practice outside of the workshops and online learning.

Key benefits

You will typically have a good first degree or an equivalent professional qualification, and a minimum of 5 years' management experience. We also welcome applications from candidates with substantial knowledge, experience and skills in a relevant field who do not meet these requirements. An excellent level of English is essential and proficiency testing may be requested.

NOTE: In-person delivery will take place in accordance with, and subject to, the latest government guidance and measures put in place by the University of Reading.

The Professional Certificate in Executive Coaching is offered in a variety of study formats:

  • In-person
    • Includes full-day workshops followed by virtual supported study, mentoring and supervision
    • Mostly delivered at our Greenlands campus, but also available in London and at our international campuses
    • Weekday and weekend intakes available
  • Live-online
    • Short workshops
      • Delivered in four parts including workshops, mentoring and supervision sessions (typically three two-hour sessions a week)
      • Morning/afternoon and weekday/weekend intakes available
    • Full-day workshops
      • Includes full-day live-online workshops followed by virtual supported study, mentoring and supervision
      • Weekday/weekend intakes available

For all formats you will need to undertake a minimum of 20 hours of coaching practice outside of the workshops and online learning.

Programme content

The Professional Certificate in Executive Coaching runs over a total of nine to ten months part-time, as broken down below:

Pre-programme

Before your course starts, you will complete around 2-3 hours of activities including background reading and self-reflection exercises

Part 1 / Workshop 1: Self-awareness as a coach

Explore your skills, attributes, beliefs and values around coaching. A basic framework for coaching is introduced.

Topics include:

  • What coaching is
  • Your role as a coach
  • Your personal coaching style
  • The GROW model

Pre-workshop study 1

In between each Part / Workshop, you will complete:

  • Relevant reading and reflection activities
  • Coaching practice
  • Formative assignments

Part 2 / Workshop 2: Tools and techniques

Try out different tools and techniques and understand the underpinning psychological concepts.

Topics include:

  • Psychological models
  • Coaching approaches
  • Coaching tools and techniques

Pre-workshop study 2

Part 3 / Workshop 3: Integration

Continue to develop your coaching competencies, take part in observed sessions with feedback, and integrate what you have learned into a coherent approach.

Topics include:

  • The solution-focused model
  • Coaching ethics
  • Coaching supervision

Part 4 / Post-workshop virtual supported study

After Part 3 / Workshop 3, you will follow a programme of virtual study that includes:

  • Coach mentoring (group and 1:1 activities)
  • Coaching supervision
  • Coaching practice (minimum of 20 hours)
  • Access to the Henley Centre for Coaching: videos, webinars and further reading

Assessment

At the end of the course, you will submit a 2,000-word assessment reflecting on your development as a coach and a 30-minute recording of a coaching session. These will form the basis of the award of your Certificate

Post-programme

You will have ongoing contact with Henley Business School through:

  • Access to resources from the online learning portal for up to 12 months
  • University of Reading and Henley alumni status
  • Option to continue membership of The Henley Centre for Coaching (fee payable)

Further study

Those with a Professional Certificate in Executive Coaching will already have completed Module 1 of the MSc in Coaching & Behavioural Change. (Please note: exemption from this module is available for participants who have previously completed the PCEC no more than five years prior).

Alternatively, you could develop your career with the Professional Certificate in Team, Board and Systemic Coaching, which together with your PCEC forms the ICF-accredited Henley Postgraduate Certificate in Executive and Team Coaching.

Accreditation

The Certificate is accredited by the International Coaching Federation (ICF), Association for Coaching (AC) and the European Mentoring & Coaching Council (EMCC). This recognises the quality of the learning experience and provides the option for individual accreditation with any or all of these bodies following successful completion of the programme.

Programme Director Jonathan Passmore leads the Henley Centre for Coaching. His doctorate is in occupational psychology, where his thesis focused on coaching relationships and behaviours. He has won many international awards and advised professional bodies such as the Institute for Leadership and Management and the European Mentoring and Coaching Council.
