Programme Overview

The Professional Certificate in Executive Coaching from Henley Business School is a part-time course that is normally taken over nine months. It is accredited by the International Coach Federation (ICF), Association for Coaching (AC) and the European Mentoring & Coaching Council (EMCC).

The programme attracts a diverse range of participants, from those wishing to start a new career in coaching to senior leaders aiming to embed a coaching culture within their organisations.

You can choose between in-person or live-online delivery. For the in-person version, you will join us at our Greenlands campus three times for residential workshops. The rest of the course content is then delivered online through videos, exercises, coaching supervision practice and 360-feedback. For the live-online version, all learning - including tutor and group interaction and mentoring and supervision sessions - is delivered through a digital platform.

You will also need to undertake a minimum of 20 hours of coaching practice outside of the workshops and online learning.

Key Benefits

You will typically have a good first degree or an equivalent professional qualification, and a minimum of 5 years' management experience. We also welcome applications from candidates with substantial knowledge, experience and skills in a relevant field who do not meet these requirements. An excellent level of English is essential and proficiency testing may be requested.

The Professional Certificate in Executive Coaching is a flexible programme offered in a variety of study formats:

  • In-person workshops (either on weekdays or weekends, delivered mostly at Greenlands but also in London and at Henley’s international campuses)
  • Accelerated in-person workshops
  • NEW: Live-online workshops

For all formats you will need to undertake a minimum of 20 hours of coaching practice outside of the workshops and online learning.

In-person workshops

Study is part-time over 9 months, with 7 days of in-person workshops over the first 3 months followed by 6 months of virtual supported study including mentoring and supervision sessions. The majority of the in-person workshops are held at our Greenlands campus.

Live-online workshops

Study is part-time over 9-10 months. It is delivered in stages with the live-online workshops delivered in 2 hour sessions, typically 3 sessions per week. Through the digital platform you will have live-learning, tutor and group interaction, as well as mentoring and supervision sessions. Further content is delivered online via a combination of videos and exercises.

Programme content

The Professional Certificate in Executive Coaching runs over a total of nine to ten months part-time, as broken down below:

Before your course starts, you will complete:

  • Background reading
  • Self-reflection exercises
  • A course questionnaire

These activities should take you around 2-3 hours to complete.

This workshop/part explores your personal skills and attributes, and your beliefs and values around coaching. A basic framework for coaching is introduced.

You will examine:

  • What coaching is
  • Your role as a coach
  • Your personal coaching style
  • The GROW model

Before Workshop 2 starts, you will complete:

  • Relevant reading and reflection activities
  • Coaching practice
  • A formative assignment

You will undertake a similar programme of preparation before Workshop 3.

This workshop/part enables you to try out different tools and techniques and understand the underpinning psychological concepts.

You will study:

  • Psychological models
  • Coaching approaches
  • Coaching tools and techniques

You will then be in a position to undertake reflective practice.

This workshop/part continues the development of coaching competencies, provides opportunities for observed sessions with feedback, and the opportunity to integrate the materials into a coherent approach.

You will examine:

  • The solution-focused model
  • Coaching ethics
  • Coaching supervision

After workshop/part 3, you will follow a programme of virtual study that includes:

At the end of the course, you will submit a 2,000-word assessment reflecting on your development as a coach and a 30-minute recording of a coaching session. These will form the basis of the award of your Certificate.

You will have ongoing contact with Henley Business School through:

  • Access to resources from the online learning portal for up to 12 months
  • University of Reading and Henley alumni status
  • Option to continue membership of The Henley Centre for Coaching (fee payable)
